Ross Bartley

Having joined the BIR, the World Federation of the material recovery and recycling industries, in 1996, Ross has been responsible for monitoring all legislation on trade issues and environmental matters which could or do impact on the recycling industry sector. Ross' specialist role in BIR is the representation of the recycling sector's interests to the UN-EP Basel Convention, and as Chair of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee, BIAC Waste Group, representing the Groups interests to the OECD’s Working Party on Resource Productivity and Waste. Ross also holds the position of Environmental & Technical Officer for the European Ferrous Recovery and Recycling Federation (EFR), and for the European Metal Trade and Recycling Federation (EUROMETREC), and the European Recovered Paper Association (ERPA). These appointments necessitate maintaining close contact with the European Institutions: The Commission, the Parliament and the Council. Prior to joining BIR, Ross was the Technical Executive for the UK Aluminium Federation and the Technical Officer for the Organisation of European Aluminium Smelters. His industrial experience as a graduate metallurgist has ranged across secondary copper refining, primary aluminium smelting, and steel production in the UK, Norway and South Africa respectively. Ross resides in Belgium.

Teresa Presas

Teresa Presas was born in Portugal in 1952 and has worked in the paper industry since 1982 when she joined Tetra Pak Portugal as Director of Communication and Marketing Services. She later went on to become Director of Communication and Environment for Tetra Pak Europe, Middle East and Africa and then, Vice President of European Affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs for Tetra Pak International. She has been the Director General of CEPI since September 2003. Teresa has a degree in psychology from the Instituto de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon and in 2008 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Helsinki University of Technology.

Merja Helander

Merja Helander, was educated in Finland and after commercial studies received Executive MBA at Helsinki School of Economics and Business administration in 2000. She worked in the Finnish paper industries’ two associations, Finnpap and Converta in 1972-1987 and in Paperinkeräys Oy as director in charge of recovered paper procurement, sales, logistics and international trade in 1987-2010. She was appointed as Director, Fibre Recycling Business of L&T – Lassila-Tikanoja as of 15 February 2011 and President and CEO of SKT – Suomen Keräystuote, a subsidiary of L&T as of 1 April 2011. She is President of ERPA (European Recovered Paper Association) and Vice President of Paper Division of BIR – Bureau of International Recycling.

David Barrio

David Barrio, the Recycling Director of the Spanish Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers (ASPAPEL) will speak on issues surrounding waste and paper recycling in a discussion titled, From Waste to Paper for Recycling: Criteria and Legislation. Barrio began his professional career in the hospital supplies field, working for different laboratories in their commercial activities. In 1997 he joined the recovered paper company CARPA (Cartón y Papel Reciclado) as the operations manager, gaining experience in the recovered paper supply and trade. In 2001, he left CHEP (Equipment Pooling Systems) and joined ASPAPEL as the Recycling Directo. He is also the General Secretary of RECIPAP, the paper and board packaging representation at the Spanish green dot packaging scheme.

David Powlson

David is a Principal at Pöyry Management Consulting in London where he is responsible for the consulting work to the pulp and paper sector in North West Europe, and manages the team delivering this. He also has specific background in recovered paper, and a focus on this area. David has undertaken numerous assignments throughout Europe and across the industry – paper companies; suppliers; end-users; chemical companies; recycling businesses; and also for the financial sector. Typical assignments include due diligence; identifying new business offerings; strategy developments and innovations; business analysis and benchmarking; amongst others. David has been at Pöyry for five years, prior to that he spent three years working for the UK Government (Wrap). At the time the government was investing substantial money in the recycling sector and needed paper industry expertise to manage the paper recycling aspects of this. Before this David was at BPB’s Purfleet Mill (near London), which made gypsum liner and testliner, latterly as Production manager. Prior to that he was involved in numerous mill developments - to the machine, fibre plant and effluent plant. David academic background is a degree in Paper Science with Management at Manchester University and he also spent a year working for the Technical University of Dresden in Germany in paper research.

Guillermo Vallés Albar joined Saica Paper in 1998. He has been in his current position with the company, materials director, since 2007. Valles Albar also is the president of two organizations, the Recycling Committee of ASPAPEL (Spanish Paper and Pulp Producers Association), and RECIPAP, the paper and board packaging representation at the Spanish green dot packaging scheme. He has served as president of both since June 2010. Valles Albar also is a member of the Recycling Committee of CEPI (Confederation of the European Paper Industry) and REVIPAP (French Association of Paper Recyclers). He holds a master’s in business administration from ESADE, in Barcelona, Spain, and a bachelors’ degree from Zaragoza University.

Marc Forman

Marc Forman began his career with Harmon Associates, now GP Harmon Recycling LLC, in 1991 as manager of finance. At that time, Harmon Associates was a division of Fort Howard Corp. In 1997, Forman was promoted to director of operations, the position he served in until 2000, when Harmon was acquired by Georgia Pacific Corp. Harmon served as director of strategic and financial planning for the company before taking the position of vice president and chief operations officer in 2003. Beginning in 2008, Forman was named president of the GP Harmon Recycling and remains in that post currently. Earlier in his career, Forman served as controller and director of operations for Letraset USA and as vice president and CFO of Graphnet Inc. He also held various accounting positions with Graphic Scanning Corp. Forman is on the board of directors for Rebuilding Together Long Island. He holds an M.B.A. in controllership from St. John's University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the State University of New York at Albany.

Niels enjoyed an international upbringing on 3 different continents, leading to an interest for global business. After a Business Studies education at the University of Groningen (the Netherlands) and a wine study in Bordeaux (France), Niels worked for 7 years as a wine buyer and in parallel trading. Since 2002 Niels has been in the Recovered Paper industry for America Chung Nam BV. He joined as Marketing Representative into an organisation of only 3 people. Since joining ACN (Europe), Niels became the Managing Director, responsible for the European offices of Rotterdam and Manchester. Within that same period ACN became a much larger organisation, with activities in every major European country and is the largest exporter of Recovered Paper to China.

Henri Vermeulen was born in 1965 and is by profession a lawyer. He has been in the recovered paper business since 1992 and is now Vice President of recovered paper at Smurfit Kappa. He is in charge of buying 100.000 tons weekly and his own recovered paper facilities. Henri is also active in a wide range of functions in recovered paper organizations and producer responsibility schemes throughout Europe.

Sofía Boente’s is a project manager for the Spanish Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers (ASPAPEL). Boente has been with ASPAPEL since 2005 and during that time, she has provided technical advice and monitoring geared towards improving municipal paper and board collection systems. Before accepting her current position, Boente served as the local sustainability technician of the Corporación Voz de Galicia from 2003 to 2005. Her work included the implementation of Local 21 Agenda, throughout 15 municipalities. Boente earned a degree in marine sciences, with a specialty in environment and pollution at the University of Vigo (Spain), after which she continued on to receive a master’s in engineering and environmental management by EOI Spain‘s School of Industrial Organisation. She will draw on her experiences in the environmental sector to speak about high quality collection systems: the Spanish case. In her speech, she will discuss how the municipal collection volumes have doubled while quality standards have remained consistent. She will also address how to combine blue bin and complementary collections, and how costs, quality and volume contribute to collection issues.

Andrea Orallo has been a project manager for the Spanish Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers (ASPAPEL) since 2006. During that time, she has worked to improve municipal paper and board collection systems through technical advice and monitoring. Orallo earned a degree in environmental sciences at the University of Alcalá (Madrid). She also successfully completed her master’s work in environmental engineering and management by EOI Spain‘s School of Industrial Organisation. Francisco J. Donoso

Francisco J. Donoso’s contributions to the recycling industry span almost 20 years. Since 1992, he has served as the managing director of Reciclajes Dolaf. Donoso also devotes his time to four organizations in the industry. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Madrid Recycling Paper Federation (AREMA) since 1999, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of Spanish Recycling Paper Federation (REPACAR) since 2005. Donoso became the executive adviser of Union of Recovering Companies (UdER) in 2007. The Paper division of Bureau of International Recycling named him vice president in 2008. Donoso has a background in biology and business administration, with a bachelor of biological science from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and masters in business administration by Know How Business College.

Clive Suckling

Clive Suckling is a graduate of Oxford University and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Clive has nearly 30 years experience in advising international companies on mergers, acquisitions and disposals, capital markets transactions, cross-border investment and corporate reporting.
Through his earlier responsibility for developing PwC’s business in Scandinavia, Clive has worked with many of the world’s leading pulp and paper companies based in that region over the past 25 years. He is a regular speaker on forest, paper and packaging industry issues and trends at events across the world and has authored many published articles on industry developments. He is based in London.

He joined UPM as the sourcing director of direct materials, before transitioning to his role as vice president of RCP in 2010. Arrateig has a dynamic background that includes a master’s in biology and an MBA in purchasing. Bernard has worked for UPM since 2001, when he joined the company as the Sourcing Director of direct materials and in 2010 became Vice President of RCP sourcing. Bernard has a masters degree in Biology, and an MBA in Purchasing.
